Zest!: User Reviews
Went for Sunday breakfast, late morning. Semi-long wait to get in, but that's the way it goes when a place is popular. Took forever for waitstaff to take our orders after we were seated by the hostess, probably 15 minutes. Easily took 45 minutes before we received basic breakfast for 4 people. Nicely presented, average food at a high price. The quality wasn't there for food that promised to be better than average, the value for my money wasn't there (and I'm not shy about spending for very good food), the overall experience was infuriating, and we left thinking there we coundn't find a reason to return. We filed out past a mob of people waiting to get in.

Breakfast today was at Zest.
Even though the food served was good it was not worth the price we paid.
Additionally when we arrived there were only two other tables seated and it was almost 30 minutes before we received our food. This is breakfast! Not a dinner experience...
One person at our table got so tired of waiting for a refill on his drink he had to get up and chase someone down to ask for it.
Another person at our table did not receive the food cooked as ordered (i.e. ordered eggs over hard and received scrambled) nor received the beverage requested until we asked a third time.

All I can say is WOW!! I don't know which Zest! patriot went to, but the Zest! I go to & have been to many, many times is NOTHING like the one he/she reviewed!! Zest! is one of Indy's best restaurants. The food, the service & the decor are all fantastic.
With one of the most diverse menus in the city, the chef cares more than most about what goes out of her kitchen. She is around all the time talking with customers in the dining room, overseeing with a very watchful eye what is going out to the tables.
The 5-Hour Braised Short Ribs are not even served with a knife because they are so tender. I also love the Chicken & Waffles!! They are so flavorful & not to be missed! And the Mexican Hot Chocolate or Cherry Pie for dessert are both HEAVEN!
Please do not over look this place, the food & service are a wonderful gift to Indianapolis. That is why we always bring our out of town guests here. We love to show Zest! off to them.
Five stars straight across the board...Thank you for being here, Zest!

I loved the thought of this restaurant! The menu sounded great, the outside dining area was inviting, I had been planning on stopping in for months.... Tonight I did.....Damn!
The menu is creative and alludes to a love for food... The food that was actually served seemed to have come from a cook who was either completely clueless or simply could not care less about the garbage served to the customers.
My wife ordered the lamb chops with pome frites in a hibiscus buerre blanc sauce... the chops were overcooked and dry, the frites were soggy with a gross overly sweet sauce that was like candy... not good at all, unfortunately my wife was the lucky one.
I ordered the '5-hour braised short-ribs' with a size of (gorganzola infused) polenta. The short ribs weren't short ribs but a full sized beef rib.... and cooking them for 5-hours is only a good idea if it's done with skill. The sad fact is the ribs were annihilated! Burnt to a crisp, and straight through the dry meat to the bone.
When I pointed out the fact to my lethargic dispirited server, she mentioned she'd ask the cooks if they were supposed to come like that... great reply, she never mentioned what excuse the kitchen may have offered, just dropped off the bill
I suppose overall service was the highlight: slow, careless and incompetent... I couldn't be more disappointed in a restaurant I really wanted to like!
Do yourself a favor and avoid it.
