And the winner is…
Goose the Market
2503 N. Delaware Ave.
Indianapolis, IN 46205Neighborhood: North Indy
Goose, run by Chris Eley and his wife, Molly, has become the go-to place for top-quality smoked and cured meats, cheeses and fresh, Indiana-raised pork, poultry, beef and lamb. Goose also offers fantastic gelato, but it's the sandwiches that make the place stand out. Regulars often gather downstairs in the Enoteca for a glass of wine or champagne and a cheese and charcuterie board.

Northside Kitchenette
6515 N. College Ave.
Indianapolis, IN 46220Neighborhood: Broad Ripple
Soups, salads, and sandwiches are more inventive than classic and all thoughtfully built. A MonteCristo topped with jam and powdered sugar, as it is in England? Grilled meatloaf sandwich with marsala-mushroom gravy? Sweet-and-tart Southern chopped salad? Therein lies our complaint with this minimalist shop, sibling and neighbor to The Northside Social: Too much good stuff.
Shapiro's
808 S. Meridian St.
Indianapolis, IN 46225Neighborhood: Downtown
Indy diners have been coming Downtown for Shapiro's Reubens since 1905. Owned and operated by the fourth generation of immigrant Shapiros, this little slice of N.Y. Jewish deli heaven bakes its own bread and quarters its own pickles daily. The sandwiches might seem pricey ($7.50 to $11), until you see your rye bread stacked 4 inches high with kosher pastrami.
Papa Roux
8950 E. 10th St.
Indianapolis, IN 46219Neighborhood: East Indy
There is no wrong answer here, and the sides don't stop. Order a sandwich and try not to get carried away with etouffee, bread pudding and garlick stew.
Ripple Bagel & Deli
850 Broad Ripple Ave.
Indianapolis, IN 46220Neighborhood: Broad Ripple
What wondrous things this narrow shop can do with steamed bagels; its menu boasts dozens of unexpected options, like the Cardiac Ken, topped with marinara, salami, pepperoni, smoked cheddar, provolone, onions and banana peppers. For a good dare, try the Lottery, where they choose the toppings for you.
