And the winner is…
Historic Steer Inn
5130 E. 10th St
Indianapolis, IN 46219Neighborhood: East Indy
An icon of E. 10th St., the Historic Steer Inn still looks like a drive-in dive but its menu is a fun, jumbled mess of omelets, mimosas, and stuffed pizza. The walls are covered in east side bric-a-brac and Scecina memorabilia, making the Steer the kind of neighborhood restaurant that Applebee's wants to be.
Nominees
Peppy Grill
1004 Virginia Ave.
Indianapolis, IN 46203Neighborhood: South Indy
The sign out front reads "Hamburgs," which sets the tone for a diner that isn't quite right -- it's perfect. The 24-hour greasy spoon has been open since the 1930s and is the favored hangout of many Fountain Square residents, hipsters, cops and more. Peppy's is so small, every seat seems within arms reach of the grill.
Original Pancake House
1518 W. 86th St.
Indianapolis, IN 46038Neighborhood: North Indy
Like its Northeastside sister location, this homey breakfast nook defies conventional chain restaurant design with a room you actually want to linger in. Pull up to the table in a wooden chair just like the one you sat in when you first fell for flapjacks.
Good Morning Mama's Café
1001 E. 54th St.
Indianapolis, IN 46220Neighborhood: Broad Ripple
Mama Carolla herself opened this breakfast joint next to her popular Indianapolis fixture, Mama Carolla's.
