When it comes to Indy’s ethnic restaurants — many of which exist quietly in strip malls — looks can be deceiving.
That was the case with Tomo Japanese Steak House & Sushi Bar, which opened in July in a small strip mall on Keystone Avenue. From the outside, it doesn’t look like much. Inside, though, Tomo features a stylish interior with seating available at tables, at the sushi bar and at tepanyaki grills.
A variety of appetizers are available, but we settled on a four-piece sushi ($6.95) and a seven-piece sashimi ($8.95) appetizer. Both included the typical salmon and tuna, good though not outstanding. And they were a little too similar to the sushi and sashimi combo ($23.95) we ordered, which included five pieces of sushi and 10 pieces of sashimi and a California roll, artfully presented on a well-chilled plate.
In addition to sushi, Tomo offers teriyaki, tempura and hibachi dinners and some noodle, hot-pot and fusion entrees.
The Tomo deluxe tempura dinner ($21.95) featured a variety of vegetables, large shrimp and plump scallops in a very light tempura breading. The scallops proved to be the star of plate.
All the dishes were beautifully presented;the hibachi chicken entree ($14.95) arrived on a flower-shaped plate, with chicken, vegetables, shrimp and fried rice. Served with two sauces, it was a generous, flavorful meal.
We ended the evening with desserts with ice cream — green tea, red bean, even tempura.
Tomo Japanese Steak House & Sushi Bar, 7411 N. Keystone Ave., is open daily. Info: (317) 254-8666 or www.tomo123.com.
