On My Plate: The Unsinkable

Get it: $4.75, the Donut Shop, 5527 N. Keystone Ave.

What it is: A belt-busting ham, turkey, Swiss and honey mustard sandwich, which, on its own, is tasty. The Donut Shop adds another dimension by taking the sandwich, rolling it up, battering it and deep-frying it. The result is a crunchy, hot, gooey delight.

Best part: The slightly sweet batter is reminiscent of funnel cake. A little dab of grape jelly nicely complements the batter and the ham.

Side note: Since there’s no purpose in ordering a salad with an Unsinkable, I went full bore and got onion rings. They were crisp and delicious. And why not throw in a chocolate-iced doughnut, too?
