With the 500 approaching, everyone told me I needed to head to Mug 'n Bun in Speedway. But why would a vegetarian go to a place known for serving burgers to race car drivers?
For the root beer, duh. Indy's Oldest and Finest Drive-in is as famous for its root beer as for its burgers and fried foods. (Yes, it is a real drive-in; carhops bring the food. Just pull up and flash your lights for service.) Mug 'n Bun's root beer even got a recent shout-out from none other than Bon Appetit.
So I stopped in one afternoon for some of the legendary brew. One sip in, and I wanted another. I wouldn't say it quenches your thirst; it's far too sweet and thick enough to slice. No, this root beer -- with its vanilla and nutty tones -- is more like dessert. Savor it.
The Mug 'n Bun, 4211 W. 10th St., is closed on Race Day, so get your fill before the big day arrives. If you get hooked, you can even waddle out with your own half or full gallon to suck on at home (and for $4.30 a gallon, that's a bargain).
