Bare midriffs for Tibet!
Michael Stipe, always a political activist, began getting R.E.M. more heavily involved in various causes by the late ‘90s. On June 14, 1998, he and his bandmates played the Tibetan Freedom Festival in Washington, D.C., where Stipe showed his support for China’s oppressed neighbor by…um, wearing some tight clothes with vaguely Asiany patterns on them.
