R.E.M. announce breakup

A look back at over 30 years of R.E.M.

In a brief statement on their official website, rock legends R.E.M. announced today (Wednesday, Sept. 21) that they have decided to "call it a day as a band." "We walk away with a great sense of gratitude, of finality, and of astonishment at all we have accomplished," the statement read. "To anyone who ever felt touched by our music, our deepest thanks for listening."

It's been a remarkable journey for the pioneering band, who emerged from Athens, Ga., in the early '80s as underground "college rock" heroes and went on to become one of the most successful rock groups in history. Here's a look back at R.E.M.'s remarkable 31-year career.—Andy Hermann, Metromix
