The 2011 college football season brings with it inevitable questions: Which electrifying, folk-hero-like (and $40,000-sports-car-“borrowing”) star player will win the Heisman Trophy? Does any school outside the Southeastern Conference actually have a shot at the national title? And how many times are all these marching bands going to play “Seven Nation Army”?
Since its 2003 release, the White Stripes’ riff-fest has become omnipresent during college games, with scores of brass, woodwinds and percussion standing in for Jack and Meg. While we love the Stripes (and their signature tune), we’d like to tip our helmets to marching bands that offer more original excuses for a little rah-rah-sis-boom-bah.—Matt Wake, Special to Metromix
