The buzz: Following last year’s club-centric “Last Night,” the ninth album from electronic star Moby (born Richard Melville Hall) expresses a post-party comedown of introspection and even melancholy. He has said that it is the result of making music for himself, without too much concern for how well it will sell.
The verdict: While he famously explored the aesthetic of blues on his most commercially successful album, “Play,” there’s a sadness that permeates these songs that feels more tangible and accessible. “Pale Horses,” with singer Amelia Zirin-Brown (best-known for her collaborations with classical cellist Yo-Yo Ma), is a compelling example of an almost weeping beauty that emerges over the course of the album’s 16 tracks. Moby even sings quite personally on “Mistake,” an embarrassed aural equivalent of walking in on him in the shower. It’s all oddly soothing.
Did you know? Cult filmmaker David Lynch (“Blue Velvet,” “Twin Peaks”) was an inspiration for the album and directed an animated, black-and-white video for the single “Shot in the Back of the Head.”
