Previously a monthly event, Root Movements graduated to weekly status at the Jazz Kitchen in November.
Every Wednesday features live music, spoken-word performances and DJs in different spaces at the recently expanded venue.
Douglas Morris, who established Root Movements with Enoch Demar, Robert Hornberger and Kyle Hodges, says the program explores the inventive sides of hip-hop and funk.
"It's OK to come in and say, 'I don't know about this music,'" Morris says. "That usually means you're about to be opened up to something new. That's not a sign that it's time to get up and go. Stick around and you might like it."
Indianapolis resident Timika Scruggs estimates she attends two Root Movements sessions per month.
The Wednesday before Thanksgiving was a good example, Scruggs says, of the good-natured audience the event attracts.
"I didn't know anyone there, but it was a genuine crowd," Scruggs says. "Everyone had a great spirit and aura to them."
