More than 200 million people are "friends" with Tom Anderson, but Indianapolis-based singer KJ Testin is a little closer to the MySpace co-founder than the rest of us.
Testin is one of "best unsigned acts around," according to MySpace Records, the music label established by the social networking Web site.
The company added Testin to its Friends & Family Network this month, giving her access to an online experiment in artist development.
The Friends & Family page, MySpace.com/msrfriends, promotes 130 bands and solo acts. Notables include electronic duo Boomkat, featuring actress Taryn Manning, and Indianapolis native Emily Wells.
When musicians schedule tours or make videos, Friends & Family uses bulletins and banner ads to spread the word across MySpace.com -- sometimes with a "featured artist" plug on the site's log-in page.
"That's hundreds of thousands of page views, and that is priceless," Testin says.
New to the country-pop genre after singing melodic metal in the band Xero Sum, Testin recently recorded four songs in Nashville with producer Ben Fowler (whose credits include engineer duties on the latest albums by Rascal Flatts and Blake Shelton).
Testin shot a video to accompany "That's What the Night Is For," a song written by Hillary Lindsey (who penned the Carrie Underwood smash "Jesus, Take the Wheel").
“With the younger and more modern country artists, you have well-written songs that apply to everybody across all genres,” Testin says. “The pop kids like it.”
