Indianapolis-based rock band Permacrush is enjoying a viral hit with its song “Only Friend.”
More than 392,000 downloads have been made through “Playlist 7,” an online initiative sponsored by Microsoft Windows and independent networking site Reverb Nation.
At press time, that makes “Only Friend” the most popular song since Playlist 7 launched in December. Each week, 50 songs from emerging artists are made available for download at Reverbnation.com/playlist7. Visitors may download seven of the 50 for free.
The popularity of “Only Friend” has generated about $600 in Playlist 7 rewards for Permacrush, says vocalist-guitarist Chris Crush (shown here).
“If we would have 99 cents for every download, we’d be doing pretty good,” Crush says. “But it’s been a tradeoff for the promotion we’re getting.”
Eric Greedy, whose credits include work with the bands Hurt and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, produced the song.
Crush says “Only Friend” will be part of an EP — tentatively titled “Snake Oil” — set for release in May.

Pretty cool seeing local bands making a name for themselves outside of the Midwest. Love the song, and video.
