For four years, Groovatron has successfully mined Indy for a larger audience with its funky jam-band vibe and fun live shows. Too bad for fans, then, when a show earlier this year was canceled after drummer Andy Dumaresq tore his ACL.

Yet that didn’t stop a band used to the grind; it just slowed them down a bit. The makeup show at the Mousetrap is March 13, and the six-piece band is glad to be back. As guitarist/vocalist Nick Ferrer says, Groovatron’s ready to come home to its own CBGB of sorts.

What exactly happened to your drummer?

He was playing basketball and hit his leg sort of funny. He didn’t think anything of it for a couple of weeks, but then he noticed it was bothering him. He went to the doctor finally and realized he had a torn ACL and MCL and another torn this-and-that and had to have surgery right away.

I don't know how familiar you are with the drums, but it was his left leg that was hurt, which was his high-hat leg. It’s important, but not as much as the kick drum side. It’s not the end of the world, but it will be a slow recovery for him.

Plus, there’s a Def Leppard factor going on there.
(Laughs.) Exactly. But Def Leppard built a space-age drum set for that guy, I think, !with a bunch of electronic triggers. Nothing against Def Leppard, but he doesn't play the hardest drumbeats or anything. I’m not a drummer, but I could be the drummer for Def Leppard. Maybe you could, too. (Laughs.)

For those who’ve never seen your show, what should they expect at the Mousetrap?
I've always thought of the Mousetrap as our CBGB, our Whiskey-A-Go-Go, our Fillmore East. It’s not the best-looking venue and you can’t picture a band playing up there when you go in, but the energy and atmosphere are something we really get with the place. It’s always a good time. What those shows have really become is a family-gathering 8atmosphere where friends can get together and catch up.

Plus, when Groovatron blows up and becomes the biggest band in the world, people can look back at those times at the Mousetrap as some of the most memorable. They’ll look back and say, “I remember when you could see Groovatron for three dollars.” (Laughs.)

Going? See Groovatron at 10:30 p.m. March 13, Mousetrap, 5565 N. Keystone Ave. $3.
