Monica Largy's singing career is only three years old, but she's been performing for much longer. The singer said that as a little girl, "I would dance to Paula Abdul's 'Cold Hearted Snake' video for my mom and her friends in the living room." It's a YouTube-worthy image but Largy believes her living-room shows had practical implications. "Silly Saturday afternoon opportunities save you from stage fright," she said.
Largy -- known onstage as MVL -- had recorded demos in 2002 but didn't give much thought to performing until 2006. Her fiance, MC Mic Sol, produced tracks for her, and other friends in the local hip-hop scene pushed her to perform.
"The worst thing that could happen is I'd get booed, and the best thing that could happen is people would like something different," Largy said.
She performed close to 50 times in 2007 on bills of all kinds. She throttled back in 2008, but also executed the first of what has become her signature event. "I wanted to do an all-girl show," Largy said, so she partnered with local singers Vika Cupnaia and Lynda Sayyah for a show dubbed Indy's Angels. The second annual event is March 6 at Spin Nightclub.
According to Largy, the women will distribute a free CD at the door, featuring five tracks by each of them, and will perform their rendition of "Lady Marmalade" together at some point during the show. Largy is also working on her first album, "Emvyelle," to be released this winter.

Interesting idea and it's things like this that will begin to set the Indy Music Scene apart.
