March 4: "The Adjustment Bureau"
The romance between Matt Damon’s slick politician and Emily Blunt’s seductive modern dancer runs into some very big obstacles in this adaptation of a story by sci-fi legend Philip K. Dick. His work has been the basis for classics like “Blade Runner,” “Total Recall” and “Minority Report,” and mega-flops like “Paycheck,” “Next” and “Imposter.” It’s hard to tell which way this directorial debut of screenwriter George Nolfi (“Ocean’s Twelve,” “The Bourne Ultimatum”) will fall, but a long delay from the originally scheduled September release doesn’t bode well.
Also opening: Johnny Depp reunites with “Pirates of the Caribbean” director Gore Verbinski to play a lizard hero in the animated Western “Rango”; Beauty and the Beast gets a modern update with Vanessa Hudgens and Alex Pettyfer in “Beastly,” also originally scheduled for last summer; when it comes to release date delays, it’s hard to top the Topher Grace/Anna Faris ‘80s nostalgia comedy “Take Me Home Tonight,” which finished filming in 2007 and promises to finally hit theaters this year.
