The Oscars. That venerable cultural institution known for celebrating the most illustrious cinematic achievements: "Gone With the Wind." "Lawrence of Arabia." "The Godfather." "Crash." Or, as the last film is more popularly known, "The Crapfest That Beat Brokeback Mountain."
Over its 80-year history, the Academy Awards have delivered their fair share of "WTF?" moments, doling out statuettes to films and actors who—in hindsight—didn't deserve them, while ignoring nominees and performances that went on to become iconic.
Who knows why Oscar voters screw up? Hype? Guilt? Awards-season fatigue? One thing we do know: The horror that is Roberto Benigni should never be unleashed on an award show ever again.
