Maria, “Metropolis” (1927)
Robot as: Political weapon
The silent classic “Metropolis” takes place in a world where social classes are seriously divided: the working class lives underground. But they have found a champion in a woman named Maria, who wants to rally her troops to fight for a better life. An evil genius sees the power she wields and builds a robot that mimics her perfectly. In a bid to control the masses, he swaps the human with the robot and no one's the wiser. The notion of not knowing who is flesh-and-bone and who is merely a robot in disguise will be repeated decades later in such movies as “Blade Runner.”
