“An American Werewolf in London” (1981)
The wolf: David Naughton as David Kessler, a lost American college student who fails to heed the warnings of European locals and watches in horror as his friend Jack is killed by a gang of roving werewolves. Later, a reanimated Jack visits David to deliver some unsettling news: David is a werewolf and should kill himself before the next full moon.
Place in werewolf history: Directed by John Landis (“Animal House,” “Blues Brothers”), “American Werewolf” injected comedy into the werewolf genre without losing the horror elements. It also was the inaugural winner of a then-new Oscar category: Outstanding Achievement in Makeup.
