Maggie Gyllenhaal nominated for Best Supporting Actress
The only true “surprise” acting nominee, Gyllenhaal was passed over for a nomination by the Golden Globes and SAG awards. Not that it's difficult to see why she made the Oscar cut. Her “Crazy Heart” co-star, Jeff Bridges, is the clear front-runner to win Best Actor and their chemistry is key to the film's success.
This is Gyllenhaal’s first Oscar nomination and she's been deserving ever since her breakthrough in the kinky romantic comedy “Secretary.” Her little brother, Jake, was nominated in 2006 for “Brokeback Mountain,” but her husband, Peter Sarsgaard, has yet to be recognized—he was passed over again this year for his turn in Best Picture nominee “An Education.” At least he'll get to be Maggie's date.
