Metromix DVD pick of the week:
"Rise of the Planet of the Apes"
Stars: James Franco, Freida Pinto, John Lithgow, Brian Cox, Tom Felton
Getting your stinking paws on this DVD, you damned dirty "Apes" fan!
Directed by Rupert Wyatt ("The Escapist"), "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" is a prequel to the popular, though dated, "Planet of the Apes" franchise, which includes five films, a TV series and even a short-lived animated Saturday morning cartoon.
Will Rodman (James Franco, "127 Hours") is a scientist at a San Francisco pharmaceutical company which tests gene therapy on chimps. In search of a cure for Alzheimer's, to which his own father Charles (John Lithgow "Dexter") has succumbed, Rodman discovers a drug that seems to reverse the effects of Alzheimer's—though it also dramatically enhances intelligence in the process.
Genetically enhanced guinea pig—er, ape—Caesar (with motion capture work by Andy Serkis, best remembered as Golem in the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy) begins to realize the difference between his own identity and human society, which sparks an epic ape uprising, culminating in a climatic battle between human and ape on the Golden Gate Bridge.
Go bananas with special features including a whopping 13 deleted scenes and an in-depth look into the underrated work of Andy Serkis as he brings to life the scene-stealing ape.
