Crown Point Jail
226 S. Main St., Crown Point
A 13-car motorcade transported Dillinger from a Chicago airfield to the so-called escape-proof jail on Jan. 30, 1934. Prosecutor Robert G. Estill declared, “This is the end of Dillinger.” Dillinger escaped on March 3, using a wooden gun reportedly smuggled in by his attorney. Partial filming (with Johnny Depp) took place at the jail in March 2008; the Old Sheriff’s House Foundation offers occasional tours.
