If the thought of slipping into an itsy-bitsy-teeny-weeny bikini leaves you feeling queasy, this season’s maillot trend is the remedy. Maillot (mah-YOH), is designer-speak for a one-piece swimsuit and no, I don’t mean the high-neck, bright-patterned suits of the eighties. I’m talking updated classics that give you pin-up girl curves for days, while simultaneously managing to conceal any “wobbly bits.”
In honor of its 100th birthday this year, Jantzen has created the Heritage Collection, which features modernized versions of its classic designs from the 1920s through the 1980s. Consider channeling Hollywood glamour with the “1950-1960” Maillot swimsuit, or if you’re looking to show a little more skin, the “1970-1980” Velvet Monokini is a smokin’ hot option as well.
Retro-inspired swimsuits often tend to have a little more structure to them, which can help slim your body — hello, instant tummy flattener. Look for details such as ruching or shirring, which will smooth out any unflattering inconsistencies. If you can swallow the idea of ruffles and beading, those are also great ways to draw attention to one area of your body and away from another. These tips aren’t strictly limited to maillots; you can find the same retro look and details with a two piece swimsuit.
Swimsuits aren’t the only type of apparel to flirt with heavy nostalgic influence this season; gingham plaid, straw hats, two-toned sunglasses, and Sperry Topsiders have all resurfaced as well, although none reach the level of chic as the maillot. To stay on trend without looking too themed, try sporting it with some oversized shades and wedges. There’s no doubt that bikinis are here to stay, as they should, but the maillot leaves us a mysterious little something that dental-floss bikinis do not. It’s called imagination.
Suits offer style instead of frump 1-piecers making waves this year
