The Spirit & Place festival has been streamlined from 16 days to 10 this year, but that doesn’t mean the annual event  has gotten “smaller.”

Forty events are scheduled under the theme of “Inspiring Places.” Topics such as neighborhoods, churches, farmers markets, parks, bodies of water and the Internet will be explored and celebrated during Spirit & Place, which opens Nov. 6 and runs through Nov. 15.
Established by IUPUI’s Polis Center in 1996, Spirit & Place is a communitywide exercise in promoting positive change.
For a list of the festival’s 10 most buzzworthy events, visit indy.metromix.com. Among  this week’s highlights:

Caddy! Caddy! Caddy!
7 to 8:30 p.m. Nov. 6, Indianapolis Museum of Art Tobias Theater, 4000 Michigan Road, $10, (317) 923-1331.
Southern Gothic storytelling meets avant-garde Japanese dance. The title of “Caddy! Caddy! Caddy!” refers to a female character found in two works by William Faulkner: the short story “That Evening Sun” and famed novel “The Sound and the Fury.” Barbed wire dominates the stage design, and butoh dancers move in disciplined slow motion.

Discovering Indy’s Green Velvet Glove
9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Nov. 8, multiple sites, free, (317) 327-7041.
The marathon event of Spirit & Place includes a bike ride, walking tour, self-guided driving tour and end-of-day discussion. The city’s Green Velvet Glove represents the legacy of the Park & Boulevard System devised 100 years ago by George Edward Kessler.

Random Acts of Improvisation
There’s no fixed spot on the calendar or map for performance art associated with Spirit & Place, but Motus Dance Theatre, Comedy Sportz, Herron School of Art and other groups plan to make spontaneous spectacles during the festival.
