Indiana may be considered a flyover state in the fashion world, but Berny Martin is sending a message: Don’t give up on the Midwest just yet. On March 20, six designers showcased their lines at the Scottish Rite Cathedral for the final show of Midwest Fashion Week, founded and produced by Martin.
Technical difficulties and sparsely filled gift bags aside, evidence suggested the Midwest is capable of earning notice. Most designers and spectators came from Indy; however, the show also drew Kristen Files, Anchorage-based designer of Mesela, and identical twin-sister designers To-Tam and To-Nya Ton-Nu from Sachika in New York.
As New Yorker Raeesha Salahuddin, Midwest Fashion Week model/runway coach, put it: “In New York, we think East Coast is the only style, but it exists in other places. I’m surprised to find Indy so up-to-date. I kind of expected to see everyone in plaid.”
It was especially encouraging to see the more fashion-forward designers give a nod to trends highlighted during New York Fashion Week — head-to-toe neutrals, feathers, trenches, metallics, scissor slits, jumpsuits and sheer fabrics.
Following the showcase of his own casual/classic business wear line, Catou Couture, Martin wrapped up the show by zooming down the catwalk on a Segway draped with a flag of his home country, Haiti.
Don't give up on Midwest fashion
