Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame Museum - 4790 W. 16th St. - Indianapolis (West Indy)

It's true that the Indianapolis Motor Speedway is a thrilling place to visit during a race: The engines are roaring, the rubber is burning and the crowd members are blacking out from sunstroke and alcohol poisoning. But wouldn't you like to get an inside look at the real Indianapolis Motor Speedway? Wouldn't you love to find out what it's like underneath that flashy, garish exterior? Don't you crave a glimpse into its true essence? Get one by taking a tour of the grounds. Due to popular demand, the 2006 tour schedule has been expanded to include 60 dates, the very first of which begins this week. According to the Speedway Web site, you'll get a behind-the-scenes view of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway's awe-inspiring infrastructure and history on the tour. Sure, the race is fine for those looking for fun. But for those of us with more complex, refined desires, this grounds tour is where it's at.

Lawn Ornaments

Indianapolis International Airport - 7800 Col. H. Weir Cook Memorial Drive - Indianapolis (West Indy)

Featured in the airport's On Screen video wall art program through June, Barry Anderson's Lawn Ornaments leads off the latest IND art exhibits. Anderson transforms vintage pop-cultural imagery into looping, meditative video animations and installations. Characterized by intense colors and floating geometric shapes, his pieces update 1950s-19 70s aesthetics for a destabilized, digital present. Objects come steadily closer or journey across the frame at a measured pace, which is the exact opposite of the quick-edit diet fed to the viewer by most mass media. By slowing the action, Anderson lures the viewer in; his animations behave more like paintings in the way that they engage the viewer. In Lawn Ornaments, Anderson creates a bug's-eye view of a slow march across a suburban lawn, with roiling clouds above, subtle images in the grass, and the occasional leap of a snail shell. The original version is 3-1/2 minutes long, with five computers taking the better part of a week to render it for the On Screen program. Anderson, a native of Greenville, Texas, received his bachelor of fine arts in photography from the University of Texas at Austin and master of fine arts in photography and digital media from the Henry Radford Hope School of Fine Arts at Indiana University, Bloomington. He currently lives and works in Kansas City, Missouri. His pieces have been seen in international fairs and festivals of new-media art from Bangkok to Dubai. From press release
