Steve Allee featuring Dick Sisto
Jazz Kitchen - 5377 N. College Ave. - Indianapolis (Broad Ripple)This night features the return of Louisville based vibraphonists Dick Sisto with pianist Steve Allee. Fresh of their soon-to-be-released CD, expect lots of jazz classics and original compositions. Always a crowd favorite so make reservations early. Nationally recognized pianist Allee is fresh off a stint with bassist Rufus Reid performs with his quartet. Pianist, composer and arranger Steve Allee is a veteran of more than 35 years on the music scene, working principally in jazz, writing and performing for syndicated radio programs, network television and motion pictures, and as a music educator. All of his career facets have blended into a distinct musical style that has a very strong visual, almost cinematic flavor because of his skill in capturing or reinforcing important moods or visual elements that inspire his projects. A native son and longtime resident of Indianapolis, Indiana, Steve was fortunate to grow up in the hometown of many jazz greats, including brothers Wes, Buddy and Monk Montgomery, Slide Hampton, J.J. Johnson, David Baker, Freddie Hubbard and Melvin Rhyne, among others. His playing style has a touch, sparkling clarity and improvisational variations reminiscent of the late Bill Evans, as well as a very strong blues influence that Steve credits to his exposure to Buddy Montgomery and Horace Silver. Dick Sisto is an accomplished jazz musician that has played with numerous luminaries in the scene over the years, thanks to his time in the studio and as music director of the Seelbach Hilton. He's recorded four CDs with Fred Hersch, Drew Gress, Tom Rainey, Kenny Werner, Barry Ries, Bobby Broom, Dennis Irwin, Jim Anderson and Mike Hyman. All the releases received heavy national airplay. After releasing American Love Song he was signed with Atlantic Records, just before their demise. Sisto appears as a sideman on several albums, including Mark Colby's tribute to Stan Getz. Sisto has given numerous clinics and master classes at places like the University of North Texas, Queens College, Leigh Howard Stephen's World Vibe Congress in New Jersey. He is the author of "The Jazz Vibraphone Book: Etudes in the Style of the Masters," which is used as a text in many schools and has been the vibraphone teacher at the Jamey Aebersold Summer Jazz Workshops for many years. A Tribute to Gil Scott-Heron
Jazz Kitchen - 5377 N. College Ave. - Indianapolis (Broad Ripple)Gil Scott-Heron was an American soul and jazz poet, musician, and author, known primarily for his work as a spoken word performer in the 1970s and '80s. His collaborative efforts with musician Brian Jackson featured a musical fusion of jazz, blues, and soul, as well as lyrical content concerning social and political issues of the time, delivered in both rapping and melismatic vocal styles by Scott-Heron. His own term for himself was "bluesologist," which he defined as "a scientist who is concerned with the origin of the blues." His music, most notably on Pieces of a Man and Winter in America in the early 1970s, influenced and helped engender later African-American music genres such as hip hop and neo soul. Besides influencing contemporary musicians, Scott-Heron remained active until his death, and in 2010 released his first new album in 16 years, entitled I'm New Here. A memoir he had been working on for years up to the time of his death, The Last Holiday, was also published, posthumously in January 2012. His recording work received much critical acclaim, especially one of his best-known compositions "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised." His poetic style has influenced every generation of hip hop.
